Samantha Teran Over Jaclyn Hawkes For Vancounver Sun&Surf Title

August 8, 2011
- Samantha Teran of Mexico City punctuated a gritty trip to the finals with a surprisingly lop-sided victory over New Zealand’s Jaclyn Hawkes to win the WISPA tour stop title.

The second-seed and world #20 Teran manhandled top-seeded world #16 Hawkes 11-2, 11-5 and 11-3 in 26 minutes.

Teran’s quarter and semi-final encounters lasted 68 and 70 minutes respectively.

The victory was a measure of redemption for the 30-year-old Mexican, who just last week was beaten in three straight by Hawkes in Singapore in the final round qualifier for the $53K CIMB Masters. Hawkes went on to reach the quarters of that event, losing to eventual titlist Madeline Perry of Ireland.

Vancouver Jericho Club Pro Shauna Flath said about the final:

“Samantha Teran won the BC Honda Dealers Open with fast, precise attacking
squash.  Jaclyn couldn't get into the match at all as Samantha had an answer
for everything and on top of every ball.  I think that the lack of hard
matches prior to the final hurt Jaclyn as she couldn't get into it.

“It was short and sweet and Congratulations to Samantha for an outstanding
week of squash here at the Jericho Tennis Club.”

RESULTS: $28,000 WISPA Sun and Surf, Vancouver, Canada
