Bay Area Artist Inspired by Urban Programs, NetSuite Open

"Out of Court" mixed media on panel, 12x16

September 10, 2014 - Mixed media artist Deanna Fainelli is a casual squash fan.

“I've always considered it an elitist game,” she said.

But recently the Bay Area resident found inspiration.

She came across a Wall Street Journal article ('Ivy League Imports Squash Stars From Unlikely Places', WSJ, Dec. 12, 2013) about the impact of urban squash programs. As an artist whose work examines and reflects urban life, Fainelli was inspired by the influence a sport can have on individuals.

“I was fortunate to go to a high school where sports were mandatory. I wasn’t the best athlete - by far - but I learned the value of teamwork, self-discipline, and the importance of having heart. If playing a sport can teach those valuable lessons and help urban students land a spot at an Ivy League school, that’s amazing.”

With the Netsuite Open in San Francisco this month, Fainelli will have the opportunity to see some of the top pros in action. The upcoming event was the inspiration for her recent mixed media work featured here titled “Out of Court.”
