September 12, 2011 - Top-seeded Dipika Pallikal of India shut down the brilliant tournament run of 15-year-old Egyptian Yathreb Adel yesterday to claim the $9000 WISPA Orange County Open title 11-6, 12-10 11-9 before an enthralled gallery at the Sports Club/LA in Irvine, California.
Adel qualified into the event on Wednesday, dominating world #92 Tesni Evans of Wales in 25 minutes, and then in the first round shocked world #44 Miranda Ranieiri of Canada in just 19 minutes. She went on to beat Canadian Nationals’ runner-up Stephanie Edmison in three, and then in the semis ground out an eye-opening four-game win over veteran world #28 Latasha Khan of the US before succumbing to the steady Pallikal in an hour-long final.
Pallikal is herself only 19 years old, and reached the semi-finals of the $25,000 Tour Des Pyramides Open this summer in France.
She is coached by the well-known Malcolm Willstrop.
