Top-seeded Latasha Khan of Seattle and second-seed Manuella Manetta of
Italy pounded out first-round wins last night at the $12,000 Southwest
Open in Tempe, Arizona, but 15-year-old rising Egyptian star Yathreb
Adel was beaten in a long five-gamer.
Adel, who shocked the WISPA field last week by gaining the final of the
Orange County Open after qualifying into the event, fell to world #45
Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana 11-9 in the fifth in a 68-minute battle.
In a mild upset, 19-year-old Australian qualifier Sarah Cardwell got past fourth-seed Orlan Noom of the Netherlands.
Teenagers Salma Hany and Merhan Mahmoud of Egypt were also first-round
casualties, with Hany losing to Tenille Van Der Merwe of South Africa
11-6 in the fifth and Mahmoud falling to Manetta in four.
