- The British Open, the oldest and most established tournament in the game, will return in May 2012 to London and culminate at the O2 Arena, it was announced yesterday.

Egyptian-born East Yorkshire businessman Assem Allam is the new title partner for the event, which hasn’t been held since 2009 when Nick Matthew beat James Willstrop to win the men’s title and Rachael Grinham beat Madeline Perry for the women’s.

The arrangement with Allam reportedly guarantees that the event will take place annually through at least 2014.

The North Greenwich O2 Arena is slated as one of the key venue points of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games which will follow in July.

Jahangir Khan of Pakistan holds the record for the most British Open men’s titles with ten, followed by Australian Geoff Hunt with eight.

Pakistan as a nation has claimed 30 individual men’s championships since the inception of the event in 1930, more than double that of any other country.

The great Australian Heather McKay won an incredible record sixteen women’s championships.

Toronto’s Jonathon Power remains the only native North American to bring home a British Open title, with his 1999 win over Scotland’s Peter Nicol.
