- Top-seeds Siyoli Waters of South Africa and Lauren Selby of England were quarterfinal winners yesterday in the $6,000 Dread Sports WISPA Open at the Sports Club/LA in DC, with no North Americans reaching the semis.

Waters, world ranked at #51, will take on third-seeded and WISPA #53 Misaki Kobayashi of Japan in the first semi-final, while second seed #57 Selby will face fifth-seeded Merhan Amr Mahmoud of Egypt in the nightcap.

In decidedly lopsided quarter-final matches, Kobayashi beat Canadian Genevieve Lessard 11-3, 11-5, 11-2 in 19 minutes and Waters dispatched Katie Tutrone of the US 11-3, 11-3, 11-7 in 18 minutes.

In the other two quarters, Mahmoud needed four games to get past Sabrina Sobhy (11-4, 6-11, 12- 10, 11-8), a first-round upset winner over Stephanie Edmison of Canada, while Selby beat Sally Skaarenborg of Denmark, also in four (10-12, 11-3, 11-4, 11-3).

Americans Niki Clement and Camille Lanier were first-round losers on Thursday, as were Canadians Edmison and former national junior champion Alix Younger.
