WDSA Philadelphia Open Update: Top Two Seeds, With Difficulty, Advance To Finals by Rob Dinerman
Dateline October 13th
--- Both defending champions Steph Hewitt and Meredeth Quick and second
seeds Narelle Krizek and Suzie Pierrepont were strongly challenged this
afternoon at the Philadelphia Country Club in the semis of the $15,000
Philadelphia Open, but both came through in hard-fought four-game
fashion, thereby earning the right to face each other Sunday afternoon
at 1:00 in the final.
Hewitt and Quick, after a fast start, had tough
sledding throughout the remainder of their 15-6 15-13 12-15 15-11
victory over the Brooklyn pair of Dana Betts and Emily Lungstrum, while
Krizek and Pierrepont, winners of the season-ending Wilson Cup this
past July, were pressed for the first three games by Philadelphians Amy
Milanek and Dawn Gray before finally breaking away in the close-out
fourth game of their 18-16 7-15 15-12 15-3 ticket to the final and with
it the opportunity to avenge their straight-set defeat a year ago at
the hands of Quick/Hewitt in the inaugural edition of this tournament.
The final is scheduled to be streamed live at ubsports.com.
