Krizek And Pierrepont Capture WDSA Philadelphia Open by Rob Dinerman
Dateline October 14th
--- Seizing control of each game early on and never relinquishing it,
Narelle Krizek and Suzie Pierrepont earned a convincing 15-12, 8 and 10
victory over top-seeded defending champions Meredeth Quick and Steph
Hewitt Sunday afternoon at the Philadelphia Country Club in the final
round of the second annual $15,000 Philadelphia Open benefiting the
Abramson Cancer Center at the University Of Pennsylvania. In so doing,
Krizek and Pierrepont reversed
the result a year ago in the inaugural edition of this tournament and
upped their head-to-head record in this rivalry between the top two
women's doubles teams to 5-2.
Krizek and Pierrepont, who last season had come up short
in all three of the close games in their pair of losses to Quick/Hewitt
(who had won both opening games 18-17 and had taken the third and final
game of the 2011 Philadelphia Open final 15-13), avoided the potential
for a repeat of that situation this time around by getting off to
substantial advantages in the first half of each game --- they led 12-6
in the first game, 5-1 in the second and 8-3 in the third. Krizek
displayed her usual dynamism but it was Pierrepont who scored many of
her team's points by establishing position in front of Quick on the
left wall and volleying winners with her backhand reverse-corner and
straight drop. This was especially true in the latter stages of the
final game, which ended with Krizek and Pierrepont in firm command and
having clearly taken a compelling first step in their quest to redeem
their disappointing 2010-11 season.
The next WDSA tour stop will be in early December at the Wilmington Country Club, site of the U. S. Open.
