Hanscom On Handicapping The Weymuller from Bob Hanscom
October 1, 2012
- Here are the reviews of the final predictions, results and comments
from the $50,000 Women's Squash Association Carol Weymuller Squash Open
being held at Heights Casino in Brooklyn, New York taking place this
afternoon.
Prediction for the finals with world #2 Raneem El Weleily of Egypt meeting world #3 Laura Massaro of England...
The Prediction:
A tough one! We have two completely different styles of play here.
World #3 Laura Massaro has a steady, patient and accurate game, backing
it up with great retrieving and the level of fitness necessary to
maintain style of game. On the other side, world #2 Raneem El Weleily
is the more flamboyant, shot-making player - and when this is working,
is almost unbeatable! But, if she becomes impatient and chooses
to attack too soon or aim too low, she'll succumb to Laura. However,
Raneem is playing the best squash of her 23 years, having it "all
together," which should result in her being victorious over Laura,
maybe in four games.
The Result: Laura Massaro defeated Raneem El Weleily in three straight games, 11/8, 11//4, 11/5 in 34 minutes.
Comments:
First game competitive but 11-8 to Massaro. As predicted, if Raneem
became impatient, she would succumb to Laura's steady play. So...second
and third games, seven tins in each game by Raneem (14 tins in all)
didn't help much...losing 11/4 and 11/5 in 44 minutes for a three games
to none win for Laura. And...in the U.S. Open, Raneem is scheduled to
meet Laura in the semi-finals on the bottom half of the draw. Stay
tuned!
