Breast Cancer Awareness Month Is Close to Home By Natarsha McElhinny, for the WDSA
October 21, 2013
- As most of you are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. However, many of you may not know why it means so much to
the WDSA and why we support it so aggressively.
Unfortunately, in
January 1994, Narelle and I, and our older sister, Nerrida, lost our
mother, Lynne, to breast cancer after she battled the disease so
bravely for three years. Some of you were lucky enough to meet
our mum as she would travel to some WISPA (now WSA) tournaments with
us. She was such a special lady; full of life, easy
to talk to, happy to have a good laugh (and a glass of wine) and loved
her family more than anything. She was also fit and strong, an avid
squash and field hockey player and took good care of herself.
But, that was not enough to save her from this awful disease at the
tender age of 48. That is why we find it
so important to make every single person, male and female, aware of
breast cancer and to take the appropriate steps to protect against
it. Whether that means getting regular exercise (like playing
squash, of course), or eating a healthy well balanced diet and getting
mammograms, the WDSA encourages everybody to be proactive in fighting
this disease. We miss our mum
everyday but take comfort in the many medical advances in treating
breast cancer and the overall awareness of the disease that she didn't
have nearly 20 years ago. We thank you all for your continued
support of the WDSA and our fight against breast
cancer.
We have supported many
breast cancer charities over the past six years including B4Pink,
Smilow Cancer Center/Yale Cancer Hospital, The Entertainment Industry
Foundation and The Abramson Cancer Center at Penn University. We
hope you will continue to support these amazing organizations directly
or by ordering a WDSA/Breast Cancer Custom Harrow Squash Racket with
Narelle Krizek - rellesquash@hotmail.com. The WDSA will
contribute 100% of the net profit to your Breast Cancer Charity of
choice.

who has unfortunately passed and you wish to honor. We want to
honor everyone.
