October 19, 2014
- Zachary Schweitzer won the Cleveland Classic this weekend. The
victory marks Schweitzer's first Professional Squash Tour tournament
title. The Philadelphia native beat Egypt's Sherif Shahin in a 46 minute final at Cleveland State University. Game scores were 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6. The match had three
strokes awarded (two to Schweitzer one to Shahin). Three times the
players appealed to the referee and were denied (Schweitzer twice,
Shahin once). And four rallies were replayed (let call) with each
player having appealed twice. The weekend tournament was hosted at Cleveland State University and represented Pro Squash Tour's 5th annual Cleveland Classic. Schweitzer hails from
the Chestnut Hill Academy and trained under coaching legend Mike
Jefferys. The 6'3" 22 year old made his PST debut two years ago. This
marks his first tournament victory. Schweitzer is currently the captain
of Tufts University's squash team. "It was a great final," said Schweitzer in post match comments. "Sherif does a few things on court that are unique to his game. Tough player. I really enjoyed the match." The tournament represents PST's 5th annual Cleveland Classic. "This tournament and
this city mean a great deal to me," said PST Commissioner Joe McManus.
For five years, it's been my favorite stop. I was thrilled to celebrate
World Squash Day in Cleveland."
