Landers-Murphy Claims WSA Hitachi Queensland Title from WISPA media
October 28, 2012
- Amanda Landers-Murphy claimed her third WSA World Tour title on
Australian soil after winning the 2012 Hitachi Queensland Open.
The New Zealand international is yet to win a title outside of
Australia, but the top seed came through a four-game battle against
Olga Ertlova to clinch victory. Having received a bye through the
first round, the world No.45 made short work of Grace McErvale, before
coming back from a game behind to defeat Lotte Eriksen of Norway in the
quarter finals. She then defeated South African No.6 seed Cheyna
Tucker in the semi’s to set up the final contest against the Czech.
Ertlova was the second highest seed for most the of tournament, after
No.2 Melody Francis suffered surprise elimination in the second round
at the hand of Aparanjitha Balamuruken. The No.3 seed swept
comfortably through the opening rounds, defeating locals Kristen
Nightingale and Maggy Marshall before battling from two games down to a
five-game victory over last week’s Ipswich Open winner, Anaka
Alankamony. The world No.49 then saw off the challenge of
Englishwoman Victoria Bell in a four-game semi-final, to meet
Landers-Murphy in the tournament final.
It was the New Zealander who drew first blood, claiming a close first
game and then from 6-4 down, won seven points in a row to win the
second. Ertlova bounced back to win the third as she targeted
Landers-Murphy’s weaker backhand, but the left-handed Kiwi was able to
dominate the fourth game and win the title with her second match point.
Speaking afterwards, Landers-Murphy said: “I was just trying to stick
to my game plan, I know she was trying to attack my backhand a lot and
I was just trying to push up and stop it.
“She played some awesome shots in the third and I had to try and change
my game up a bit because it just wasn’t working any more.”
Landers-Murphy now heads home to New Zealand to prepare for the World Women’s Teams Championship in France in November.
