- Raneem El Welily has been named Squash Player’s Female Player of the
Month for October after becoming the first Egyptian woman to win the
$100,000 Al-Ahram Open.
The world no.5 ended a PSA Tour title drought lasting six months by
edging out her top-seeded compatriot, Nour El Sherbini, 3/2 in a
thrilling final lasting just over an hour in front of the Giza pyramids.
The 27-year-old from Cairo looked to be cruising to victory when she
opened up a 2/0 lead, but El Sherbini battled back to level, before El
Welily claimed the decider in an 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 11-7 success.
She said afterwards: “Nour is the best player out there at the moment
in women’s squash. She played a great match and really pushed hard
until the end.
“I think we both gave it everything we had – which is fitting for this final in this amazing location.”
El Welily now moves on to the U.S. Open, where she will be bidding for
her first World Series triumph since the Windy City Open in March.
