Update: McElhinny/Krizek To Face Quick/Hewitt In Philadelphia Open
Final by Rob Dinerman
Dateline October 4th
---
Top seeds Tarsh McElhinny and her sister, Narelle Krizek, and No. 2
seeds Meredeth Quick and Steph Hewitt both motored through their
respective semifinal matches this evening and will meet Sunday at noon
in the final round of the fourth annual Philadelphia Open, hosted as
always at the Philadelphia Country Club. Krizek and McElhinny eked out
a tight 15-13 first game against Dana Betts and Victoria Simmonds (when
McElhinny hit a backhand cross-court past Simmonds on the 14-13 point)
and then had their way throughout the 15-4, 15-8 remainder, while Quick
and Hewitt, who captured the inaugural edition of this tourney in 2011,
had to fend off a strong mid-match challenge from qualifiers (and 2013
U. S. Open finalists) Amy Gross and Alex Clark before eventually
asserting themselves 15-4 9-15 15-13 15-7 in a match that might have
gone in a very different direction had Hewitt not executed a delicate
forehand cross-drop that Gross could not track down at 14-13 in the
pivotal third game.
Earlier,
Quick and Hewitt had dominated their quarterfinal with 2014 U. S.
National Doubles finalists Gina Stoker and Kelsey Engman 15-6, 9 and
10, and McElhinny and Krizek had similarly opened with a straight-game
(15-7, 12 and 9) win over Amy Milanek and Dawn Gray.
