- Peru’s Diego Elias has been named Squash Player’s Male Player of the Month for October, after reaching the semi-finals of the $100,000 NetSuite Open in September and a career-high 15th in the world rankings.
“This is my lucky tournament,” said the unseeded 20-year-old after upsetting third seed Nick Matthew in the quarter-finals and sixth seed Fares Dessouky in the first round, both 3/1.
“I was in the semis last year and I love playing here. The crowd are amazing. I’ve had an amazing tournament and I want to keep playing like this.”
Elias bowed out in the last four, but only after giving world champion Karim Abdel Gawad a scare. He led the Egyptian 2/0, but the top seed fought back to beat him 6-11, 4-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 in a 90-minute marathon.
The former world junior champion now moves on to the U.S. Open, where he is also unseeded and meets Hong Kong’s Max Lee in the first round.
