Canada Drops Opener To Australia At World Teams by Danny Da Costa

- Canada dropped its first match at the Women’s World Team Squash
Championships in Nimes, France today to defending World Champions
Australia (3-0). The defending World Team Champions boast 4
players in the Top 60 in the Women Squash Association (WSA) world
rankings.
The Canadian Team competed very well winning the opening game of each
of their matches before losing in 4 games. Earlier today,
Australia defeated Austria (3-0) and with their result against Canada
they are secured a position in the Top 16. Canada takes on
Austria on Tuesday for a chance to advance to the Rd of 16.
In the opening match between #1 players, Australia’s Rachael Grinham
(world #16) def. Samantha Cornett (world #33) of Ottawa, 3 – 1 (10-12,
11-8, 11-3, 11-3). The 21 year old, started well taking the first
game before the former world #1 Rachel Grinham took control of the
match to win in 4 games.
The second match between Australia’s Donna Urquhart (world #17) and
Canada’s Alex Norman (world #66) of Montreal. The Australian
clinched the victory 3-1 against Norman to secure the win over the
Canadian Team. Norman, 29, won the opening game 9-11, before Urquhart
settled into the match defeating the Canadian in 4 games 3-1 (9-11,
11-5, 11-7, 11-8).
Making her debut for the Canadian Team was 25 year old, Susie King of
Calgary. Originally from England, King has been living in Canada
for a number of years and is currently the Assistant Squash
Professional at the Calgary Winter Club. King an unranked player,
took on (world #53) Melody Francis of Australia losing very
competitively 3-1 (4-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5).
