US Women Beat Japan, Advance to Top 16 by Christine McKenna
With US Coach Chris Walker
November 13, 2012 - The competition at Parnasse Squash Center heated up today as US
Women secured a position in the Top 16!
First up for the US was #3 Olivia Fiechter who defeated Japan #3 Mayu Yamazaki
decisively 3-0.
The second match featured US #2 Sabrina Sobhy who clinched the win for the US in a
closely contested 5 games with Japan #2 Chinatsu Matsui.
US #1 Natalie Grainger started well taking the first game before Japan #1 Misaki
Kobayashi took the match in 4 games.
Next up for the US women is Australia as they move into the knockout Round of 16.
Natalie Grainger commented on the match today:
“I was so impressed with the‘little ones’…they competed like champions.
Having worked with all three in preparation for the world
juniors in Boston 2011, it has been wonderful to see them grow
as people and players, and winning their first match for the Women’s National Team
was very special. Olivia was a class act today and completely dominated her
opponent with deft touch to the front, great width, length and some excellent hustling
in rallies when she was on the run. Sabrina showed her mettle on the #2 slot, winning a
grueling match against a seasoned opponent. She retrieved and hit her way through 5
hard games and put in the odd tricky trickle boast winner from the front. I was so proud
of them and they saved their “old”, retired (coach/teammate) #1 from a high pressure
match! ‘Grainger’ is getting better as each match passes, accuracy and foot
speed…!” Results: Olivia Fiechter (USA) def. (JPN) Mayu Yamazaki 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 11-3) Sabrina Sobhy (USA) def. Chinatsu Matsui (JPN) 3-2 (9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8) Misaki Kobayashi (JPN) def. Natalie Grainger (USA) 1-3 (11-8, 11-13, 8-11, 10-12)
