Zaman Zaps Avila In Edmonton Upset by Howard Harding
29 November 2013
- Unseeded Pakistani Farhan Zaman claimed an unexpected place in the
quarter-finals of the ReidBuilt Homes Edmonton Open when he upset No.4
seed Alfredo Avila in the opening round of the PSA World Tour
Challenger 15 squash event in its sixth successive year at the Royal
Glenora Club in Edmonton in the Canadian province of Alberta.
The 20-year-old from
Peshawar took just 26 minutes to crush World No.56 Avila 11-3, 11-7,
11-5 to earn a clash with Spaniard Carlos Cornes Ribadas.
The qualifier from Santiago de Compostela also upset a Mexican, ousting World No.78 Arturo Salazar 5-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-7.
Ribadas will be joined
in the last eight round by fellow qualifier Scott Arnold after the
Australian despatched Canadian 'lucky loser' Fred Reid 11-5, 11-9, 11-9.
But there will be Canadian interest in the next round when Calgary's Graeme Schnell takes on Egypt's No.2 seed Karim Ali Fathi.
Schnell defeated
higher-ranked Welshman Peter Creed 11-8, 11-6, 11-5. But the
25-year-old wild card's hope to meet his younger brother Andrew Schnell
for a place in the semi-finals were dashed when 20-year-old Ali Fathi
beat 22-year-old Schnell junior, a qualifier, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8
in 71 minutes.
