Tory Takes Maiden Tour Title At Mackay Open by Howard Harding November 2, 2014
- Just a week after making her maiden appearance in a WSA World Tour
final, England's Victoria Temple Murray claimed her first title today
in Australia when she upset home favourite Sarah Cardwell in the final
of the Women's Mackay Open, the WSA Tour 5 event in its fifth year at
the Mackay Leisure Centre in Mackay, Queensland.
After overcoming injured compatriot Fiona Moverley in the
quarter-finals - in a repeat of last week's Tasmanian Open final clash
- fifth seed Temple Murray defeated Argentina's No4 seed Antonella
Falcione to reach the final.
Cardwell, the top seed from Melbourne, had cruised to the final - her seventh on the Tour - without dropping a game.
The 23-year-old world No61 took the opening game - but Temple Murray
came back fighting to take the next three to win 6-11, 11-9, 13-11,
11-4 after 50 minutes to record her Tour title triumph.
"WOOOOOOO! First EVER WSA title! MacKay 5K! So happy, I can't stop the
exclamation marks!!" tweeted the exuberant 20-year-old from Exeter in
Devon afterwards.
Temple Murray, who celebrates a career-high 79 world ranking this
month, now moves on to next week's Queensland Open in Brisbane where
she is seeded to reach the quarter-finals.
