Sarah Jane Perry Wins Mexico Open For Second Straight WSA Title by Matt Wagg
November 6, 2012
- Sarah Jane Perry completed a WSA World Tour title double after
winning the Abierto Mexicano de Raquetas in Toluca Mexico, her second
win in two weeks.
The 22-year-old Englishwoman beat three higher seeds on her way to the
title, having recorded a similar victory in last week’s Pyramid
International in New York.
Perry made short work of local first round opponent Ivonne Diaz, before
fighting back from two games down to defeat No.3 seed Samantha Cornett
of Canada. She then stormed through the semi-final stage, taking
the first game from No.2 seed and fellow Englishwoman Lauren Briggs
without dropping a point, before closing out a confident four-game win.
She then faced Line Hansen, elevated to top seed following the
withdrawal of Samantha Teran through injury before the event
began. The Danish favourite defeated Celia Allamargot in the
first round, followed by confident wins over Thaisa Serafini and
Nicolette Fernandes to meet expectations in reaching the final.
It was Perry again who started quickest, taking the opening game by a
considerable margin. A similar score-line followed in the second
game, as the Dane struggled to assert herself against the young
Englishwoman. A change in tactic allowed the top seed the
opportunity to get back into the game, and she duly won the third game
but Perry returned refocused for a much closer fourth game. She
claimed the title on the tie-break as Hansen, ranked 10 places above
Perry, was unable to quell the younger players’ energy.
The Englishwoman rose 10 places in last week’s November rankings
release, and looks set to continue her elevation after claiming the
third and biggest title of her career to date.
Final:
[6] Sarah-Jane Perry (ENG) bt [1] Line Hansen (DEN) 11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 13-11 (39m)
