English Double In Swiss Junior Open by Howard Harding
December 11, 2012
- Richie Fallows and Victoria Temple Murray pulled off an unexpected
English double in the Swiss Junior Open Squash Championships after
winning the U19 titles in the European Squash Federation Junior Circuit
event at the Tennis & Squash Center Sihltal in Zurich.
Top seed Fallows reached the final as expected - but his opponent Joel
Makin, a 9/16 seed from Wales, upset second seed Claudio Pinto and
sixth-seeded Dane Thomas Laursen to reach the climax against
expectation.
And the 18-year-old Welshman took the opening game - but favourite
Fallows fought back to clinch the title, winning 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7
in 59 minutes to add the Swiss to the Nordic Junior U19 Open trophy he
won in October.
The favourite also reached the women's U19 final - but this time Finn Emilia Soini was unable to walk away with the title.
The 17-year-old from Espoo faced second seed Victoria Temple Murray -
but the 18-year-old from Exeter was too strong, winning 11-6, 11-7,
7-11, 11-5 in 41 minutes to keep the trophy in England hands for the
second year in a row.
