- The Professional Squash Association (PSA) can announce that the
picturesque location of Cartagena, Colombia will become home to the
biggest squash tournament ever to be staged in Latin America when the
inaugural 2016 Squash Colombia Open gets underway in February 2016.
With $115,000 in prize money up for grabs the PSA M100 tournament will
be the most lucrative 16-man draw event in the history of the PSA World
Tour and sees Colombia become the latest world class location to add
its name to the sport’s global portfolio of destinations.
Local favourite and current World No.5 Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the
high-flying ‘Colombian Cannonball’, is set to headline what promises to
be a world class draw when the action gets underway on February 16th
from the stunning location of Plaza De La Aduana, nestled within the
old town of the city which hugs the Caribbean coastline.
With the South American Junior Squash Championship set to take place
simultaneously the week-long event promises to be the biggest squash
spectacle ever to take place in Latin America.
“We are thrilled to confirm that the 2016 Squash Colombia Open will
take place in February and look forward to staging what will be the
biggest squash tournament ever to take place in all of Latin America,”
said Squash Colombia President Pablo Felipe Serna.
“Cartagena is one of the most picturesque cities in all of South
America and we feel certain that the tournament, which will be played
at sea-level therefore eliminating any altitude, will become one of the
most sought after on the PSA World Tour. We very much look forward to
welcoming the world’s best players here next year in a move that will
help to boost the sport’s growing popularity in the region.”
The 2016 Squash Colombia Open will take place from February 16 - 20,
2016 in Cartagena, Colombia with the action to be streamed live on
SQUASHTV.
