- France’s Greg Gaultier has been named Male Player of the Month for
December by the London-based Squash Player magazine after becoming the
oldest first-time winner of the PSA Men’s World Championship.
The 32-year-old atoned fordefeat in four previous finals – in
particular in 2006, when he squandered five match balls against
Australian David Palmer – by overpowering Egyptian Omar Mosaad 3/0 in
the final at Bellevue in the USA.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Gaultier, who will regain the world no.1
ranking in December. “There are no words that can describe this feeling.
“Since I was a kid, it was always my dream to win this tournament. Maybe in the past I put too much pressure on myself.
“I remember my first experience at 23 years old in front of the
pyramids in Egypt. I had five match balls. My head was shaky and frozen.
“But you always learn from losses and it was an experience. I lost four
times and I kept wondering if it was ever going to happen. I just kept
on believing in myself and kept on working hard. I was always
disciplined.”
