Avila Powers To Veracuz, Mexico PSA Title by Howard Harding
4 December 2012
- Top seed Alfredo Avila claimed the inaugural Proteva Sports Open
title after surviving a 50-minute all-Mexican final of the PSA
Challenger 5 squash event at Squash Insurgentes in Xalapa, Veracruz, in
Mexico.
In this week's latest PSA world rankings, the 21-year-old from Mexico
City rose to a career-high No72 - becoming, for the first time, the
second highest-ranked player in his country.
His opponent in the final was 29-year-old Eric Galvez, a long-time
former Mexican number one who is enjoying a significant return to form
over the past month.
But Avila was too strong for the former world No33, now ranked outside the top 100 - winning 15-13, 11-7, 11-9.
The title triumph marks young Mexican Avila's fourth PSA World Tour title - but his first on home soil.
