In Doha, Qatar, yesterday, number one American Julian Illingworth
suffered a four-game loss to Egyptian qualifier Omar Abdel Meguid in
the first round (Round of 64) of the $350,000 PSA World Open.
The 24-year-old Meguid, from Giza, is ranked 39 spots below Julian in
the PSA world rankings. He is currently 68th, while Illingworth of New
York City is 29th.
Julian got off to a good start, claiming an 11-8 first game, but Meguid
stiffened in the second game overtime, pulling it out 15-13 and
essentially turning the match, as he took the final two sets at 7 and
4.
The linescore for the Egyptian was 8-11 15-13 11-7 11-4 in 75 minutes of action.
Meanwhile Shawn Delierre of Montreal fared better in besting England's
Adrian Waller in a gritty four-game performance. In the second-longest
match of the day, Delierre came through in 102 minutes, 12-10 8-11 11-7
12-10.
Delierre moves on to face World #1 James Willstrop on Sunday in the Round of 32.
In today's bottom half of the first round, Toronto's Shahier Razik will square off with South African qualifier Shaun Le Roux.
Illingworth's Round-of-64 loss, coupled with Chris Gordon's 4-game loss
to England's Joe Lee in the qualifying round Thursday, ends American
involvement in the 2012 Men's World Open.
