Ontario Claims Gold At 2013 Canadian Masters by Danny Da Costa
January 21, 2013 OTTAWA (ON)
– Team Ontario found redemption from last year’s event and came out on
top at the 2013 Canadian Master’s Team Championships this past weekend.
The event was held at the Vancouver Racquets Club in Vancouver, BC and
featured eight teams from across the country. The host province of
British Columbia was able to enter two teams, which fared well as they
captured 2nd and 4th place. This annual Master’s event features teams
of seven athletes, four men and three women over the age of 35.
Team Ontario defeated British Columbia 1 in the final encounter, which
again came down to the swing match between #1 players, Ontario’s David
Sly versus BC’s Trevor Latimer. Sly took the match, giving Ontario an
overall 4-3 win and the gold medal. Other Ontario team members included
Scott Kemp-Gee, Chris Sadler, Michael Bertin, and ladies Lisa Coates,
Elka Markus and Connie Sacchetto.
In the 3rd place match, Alberta claimed their second straight bronze,
sweeping British Columbia 2 by a score of 7 matches to none. Alberta
was close to a gold medal match berth, having narrowly lost to Ontario
4-3 in their semi final encounter.

The previous weekend of January 11th -13th featured the 2nd annual
Canadian Junior Doubles Championship, which was played at the Granite
Club in Toronto, ON. Over 75 athletes competed for the national titles,
hailing primarily from Ontario. This event is still in its infancy, but
Squash Canada and current tournament chair Jessica DiMauro are both
excited to see the even grow and reach to all corners of the country.
Notable Champions included Madlen O’Connor and Alison Richmond
who captured the Girls Under 19 Championship for the second year in a
row, again dropping only one game the entire weekend. Canadian Junior
Open bronze medalist James Flynn added a gold medal to his season’s
tally, winning the Boys Under 13 title with partner Dirk Holtshousen.
Thank you to our hosts, The Granite Club, and all of the tournament
supporters. Congratulations to all who competed in the event, as we
look forward to seeing the continuous growth of Junior Doubles in the
years to come! Full results are available on Squash Canada’s website -
