Mr. Thatcher’s video
is interesting and inspirational , but he proposed no concrete actions
which will change the economic fortunes of public squash clubs. Outside
courts are viable in temperate climates, but they are impractical in
northern areas where it gets very cold . Hitting a squash ball around
an open air squash court in the northern states in February would be
like whacking around a dead mouse with a shovel.
Driving down construction costs is a noble idea. But panelized and
precast courts are already widely in use. What changes does Mr.
Thatcher propose which will reduce construction costs ?
I agree 100% that squash is a fantastic game, but singles isn’t so
fantastic when one is 64 and can’t move to the front like Ali Farag .
11 point games can end in four minutes. Doubles is a wonderful
alternative, but building doubles courts is an expensive proposition .
Mr. Thatcher states “We have the best game in the world.” He must never
have seen James Stout play racquets. The speed, power, and hand-eye
coordination of top level racquets is breathtaking. The only event as
thrilling as a world racquets challenge is a heavyweight boxing title
bout .
