Walker/Chaloner  v  Bassett/Roberts (3-1)

Walker/Chaloner got off to a great start hitting with some good pace, forcing some errors from Bassett/Roberts. The second game saw a big turnaround as Bassett/Roberts found some momentum. Bassett found his reverse helping them pull ahead and take the game to draw the match level. The third was a high paced affair which saw Walker/Chaloner edge through and take the game 15-8 with some fantastic strategic angles. The Fourth was nip and tuck as the teams traded points all the way reaching a 14-14 climax.  The final point saw some incredible retrieving with Chaloner smashing a backhand past Bassett to take the match 15-14 and 3 games to 1.

Stout/McArthur v  Nanda/Samper (3-1)

McArthur/Stout were very slow out of the blocks with numerous unforced errors as Nanda/Samper blew away their opponents to take a  1 game lead. Nanda/Samper steadied themselves in the second with some great retrieving but some timely winners from McArthur helped his ensure a 2-0 lead.  McArthur/Stout upped their game in the third as the pace put  Samper/Nanda on the back foot  creating some unforced errors at right time as they again edged a close game  15-14. The final game saw another quality display of doubles as both pairings ramped up the pace. McArthur/Stout held strong to close out the match 3-1.

Smith/Park v Barker/Jenson(3-0)

Qualifiers Barker and Jenson, teaming up for the first time this week were up against the experienced duo of Smith and Park. Jenson was settling into his first doubles tournament well and they rushed into an early lead. Smith and Park's experience however saw them steady things and not showing any nerves  taking a tight first game 15-14. Jenson was seeing plenty of balls early in the second as his opponents looked to expose his limited doubles experience. This strategy proved effective as Smith/Park  as they held a comfortable lead throughout to take advantage and win the second game 15-9. The final game was all in a days work for Smith and Park as they convincingly took it 15-6 and book a place in the quarter-finals tomorrow afternoon

Khan/Russell v Reid/Mariani (3-2)

Match of the night, and worth the wait for fans who decided to ignore their curfew and watch some fantastic doubles. Canadian qualifiers Mariani and Reid were up against the formidable force of Russell/Khan. Although going in as rank underdogs, Mariani and Reid took the first in a tight battle 15-14 with some clever play - in particular Reid who was deadly on the right wall. The second game saw Russell/Khan stepped up their games to impose themselves on the match and take the game 15-7. Reid and Mariani steadied and again Reid was able to  get the better of his opponent Khan with some clever front court angles, taking the third  15-11.

The 4th game was a fiercely fought contest with Russell/Khan realizing the urgency of the situation. The teams traded points in the 4th and  the referee was called into action to make some clutch decisions. With the scores locked at 14-14, Mariani/Reid had a chance to close the match however a no let call on Mariani ensured the match was going to a decider. It was now 9.30pm and the thinning crowd were left on the edge of their seats. Russell and Khan came out with a different strategy, mixing their shots with a succession of skid boasts and Philadelphia's. The change of pace clearly unsettled Mariani and Reid as they found themselves down 10-5 relatively quickly. To their credit, Mariani/Reid managed to steady themselves and claw back to an 11-11 score line. Russell/Khan eked out the final few points and will no doubt be relieved to have survived a very solid challenge from this Canadian pairing who are quickly becoming a force on the doubles tour.
