Trinity Men's Team Eludes Upset At Rochester

January 26, 2013 -Rochester, N.Y. - First-year Karan Malik (Mumbai, India) earned the clinching point with a 3-0 victory over senior Adam Perkiomaki to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 5-4 win over the No. 5-ranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets in men's squash action this afternoon at Lyman Courts. Trinity, ranked No. 2 in the nation, improves to 10-0, while the Yellowjackets fall to 7-5 with their third straight setback.
The Bantams started out strong with two straight wins at No. 9 and No. 6. Junior Matt Mackin (Greenwich, Conn.) dispatched Juan Herrera 11-5, 11-4, 11-3, while first-year Zeyad Elshorafy (Alexandria, Egypt) won over Karm Kumar, 3-1. Rochester quickly answered with Faraz Khan winning a tough five-set match at No. 3 over Trinity sophomore Miled Zarazua (Mexico City, Mexico). After losing the first two sets, 11-9, and, 11-6, Zarazua responded and won sets three and four, 11-7 in each. Khan held strong and took the point with an 11-5 win in the the fifth set.
Will Mohr then evened the score at 2-2, with an impressive four-set win over Bantam senior Juan Flores (San Salvador, El Salvador). Senior Oscar Lopez put the Yellowjackets ahead in the match with a 3-0 win over Trinity senior co-captain Johan Detter (Malmoe, Sweden). Trinity answered right back with a three-game sweep of their own at the No. 7 spot. Sophomore Moustafa Hamada took care of Meng Xiaomen, 11-3, 11-8, 11-5, squaring the match at 3-3.
At No. 2, Yellowjacket freshman Neil Cordell took the first game 11-8, but Bantam rookie Juan Vargas (Bogota, Colombia) roared back and won the point in four. Malik won the No. 4 match, while senior Reinhold Hergeth (Bloemfontein, South Africa) fell to No. 6-ranked Andres Duany, 3-0, in the No. 1 match to round out the scoring.
