SDA North American Open Doubles Semis: Mudge/Gould Lose To Price/Leach For Second Straight Time by Rob Dinerman
Dateline January 27th
--- For the second tournament in a row (previously in the Boston final
two weeks ago), the previously near-invincible Damien Mudge and Ben
Gould were eliminated by Clive Leach and Paul Price when the two teams
met at the Greenwich Country Club Sunday afternoon in the semifinals of
the North American Open Doubles championship --- and unlike in Boston,
when Leach and Price had to save a third-game match-ball against them,
this time they won convincingly, rebounding from a narrow first-game
setback by running off the next three games 15-6, 10 and 10. The
outcome means that Mudge and Gould, the two-time defending champions in
this tourney, who had dropped only one of their first 74 matches over
the past two and a half seasons, have now lost two of their last three,
their two defeats sandwiching a taut (15-14 10-15 15-14 15-13)
quarterfinal win over Jonny Smith and Greg Park. Facing Price and Leach
Monday evening in the final will be Manek Mathur and Yvain Badan, who
won 14-15 15-13 15-14 15-8 in the bottom-half semi against Preston
Quick and Matt Jenson.
