Prior
to May 17th, 2013, the game of squash was non-existent and practically
unknown at the Arroyo Seco Racquet Club in South Pasadena, CA. On that
date, the club's Ed Brooks Family squash-court (the first) was
dedicated and celebrated. The club's squash program has now been
operating for about two-and-a-half years with approximately 60
families, adults and juniors playing, practicing and taking lessons.
Seeing
a need for additional squash facilities, management gave approval to
having a second squash-court added to the club's facilities. With the
help and financial support from the U.S. Squash conversion program, the
club's squash-playing community, "friends" and the Robin A. Sateriale
Foundation, a second squash-court has now been installed.
On
Friday evening, January 22nd, a dedication to and for both
squash-courts was celebrated with 60 of the club's adult and junior
squash-players in attendance. Following a half-hour of mingling,
wine-tasting, buffet, and entertainment provided by the EPC Jazz Trio,
a few of the club's dignitaries were introduced and gave thanks to all
who contributed to the project. They included MC John Dewis (Harvard
and private school Dean), David Kaye, prominent Hollywood voice-over
actor and the club's non-profit organization Let's Teach Executive
Director Scott Harris.
This was followed by a ribbon-cutting
of both courts by the 20 juniors in attendance. Before the juniors
engaged in some 3/4 court and round-robin squash play, raffle
prizes provided by local DUNLOP representative Rich Neighbor were
raffled off to a few of the lucky attendees by committee member David
Sosa. Junior squash-play was supervised by the club's newly appointed
Associate Teaching Professional from Scotland, Tom Williams. A
fun-filled evening was had by all!
With the addition of a
2nd squash-court, the goal will be to truly expand the club's squash
program. It will now be possible for more members and guests to not
only practice, play squash and take lessons, but host group squash
programs, clinics, exhibitions, tournaments and eventually a junior
summer squash camp as well.
