Mighty Moverley Takes Edinburgh Title by Howard Harding
February 2, 2015
-Clearly almost back to her best after a five-year break from the WSA
World Tour, England's unseeded Fiona Moverley was the surprise winner
of the Women's Edinburgh Open after upsetting four higher-ranked
players in a row in the WSA Challenger 5 squash event at Edinburgh
Sports Club in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The 28-year-old from Hull's biggest scalp came in the semi-finals when
she defeated Lucie Fialova, the top seed from the Czech Republic, 11-4,
11-7, 6-11, 11-2 in 34 minutes.
In the final, the sixth of her career, Moverley battled for 51 minutes
to overcome 18-year-old Nele Gilis, the fourth seed from Belgium, 11-7,
7-11, 12-10, 11-6.
"She's a real battler," said Moverley after the final. "It looked like
she was tired but she never stopped. I knew I needed to move her around
and play my short game when I could, and I did that well for the most
part. She's better than me at a hard-hitting game, so I needed to mix
it up and I was pleased with how I played at the end."
The triumph marks Moverley's fourth WSA Tour title, the first of which
she claimed in Spain in 2009 after three years on the Tour.
"It feels great to win another WSA title. After five years off the
circuit, mainly because of lack of funds, I thought it was time to give
it another go and I'm really enjoying it. I should be back in the top
100 now - I just need to get a few more tournaments in.
"I'm having a great time playing in Hull, where squash is really on the
up with all the work at the Humber Junior Squash Academy and the
support that Dr Allam is giving to all the squash projects in the area.
Long may it continue!"
