Hull Set to Welcome Back World’s Best by Scarlett Smith
March 10, 2015
- The world’s top squash players, including three time world champion
Nick Matthew confirmed that they will be heading back to Hull for the
Allam British Open as the men’s and women’s draws were unveiled today.
A total of 46 countries will be represented in May with world number
one and eight time world title holder, Malaysia’s Nicol David leading
the way in the women’s event whilst Hull’s James Earles and Fiona
Moverley will be hoping to reach the main draw after being named in
qualifying.
Hull City’s owner Dr. Allam recently extended his sponsorship of the
prestigious tournament to a further three years to ensure the
competition remains in Hull until 2017 – incidentally Hull’s City of
Culture year.
Dr. Allam has been instrumental in leading the way for squash on the
global stage with his ongoing sponsorship and commitment to equal prize
money for men and women by 2017.
Dr Allam said: "I am delighted to welcome the world's best squash
players back to Hull to compete for the Allam British Open title.
Squash is a great passion of mine and to bring these amazing athletes
from all corners of the globe to the UK, and particularly Hull East
Yorkshire, is an enormous pleasure. I look forward to watching
some great matches, seeing the best of the best both men and woman in
action and seeing new talent coming through all competing for this
world famous title."
Three time British Open Champion Nick Matthew said: “I’m really excited
to play in Hull again, as a professional squash player we travel to
tournaments across the world but as a Yorkshireman it really means a
lot to me to be able to play in front of a home crowd. Next to the
World Championships the British Open is the biggest event in our
calendar, so I’ll certainly be hoping to clinch a fourth title.
“The players are all really grateful to Dr. Allam for his continued
sponsorship of such an important event. His passion and
commitment to the game is fantastic,” concluded Matthew.
Hull’s own Fiona Moverley added: “I’m beyond excited to be involved in
such a huge event in my home city. I didn’t play in the previous
two years so to actually be playing in 2015 means the world to
me. I’m hoping I can put on a good show in front of a passionate
local crowd.”
Dr. Allam showed his support to International Women’s Day on Sunday by
posting a photo with a message about his commitment to equal prize
money.
The 2015 event is being held at the Airco Sports Arena between 11-17
May with the University of Hull hosting the qualifying matches and a
selection of games from round one of the men’s and women’s competition.
