Benson Sets The Standard In Squash-a-Mile Challenge by Scarlett Smith London, Wednesday 14th March, 2012 -
Squash-a-Mile, the fundraising initiative announced last month by
England Squash & Racketball (ESR), is well underway with thousands
of squash players from all over the country expected to take up the
innovative challenge this week to raise money for Sport Relief.
Competitors are challenged to run a mile within the confines of a
squash court (165 lengths) and post their time at
mytime@englandsquashandracketball.com. The nation’s four fastest
will be invited to take part in a run off at the East Winter Garden,
Canary Wharf, London on Friday, 23 March when Finals Day the Canary
Wharf Classic, one of the season’s most popular tournaments, coincides
with the launch of Sport Relief 2012.
Among those to have taken part so far is 12 year-old Simon Priddle from
Exeter who has thrown down the gauntlet with a time of 9 minutes and 28
seconds and raised £55.80 in the process.
With the help of Bucks Sport, ESR Junior Squad mascot, Benson, has also
entered into the sprit in his own inimitable style.
Lisa Hargrave a full-time Derbyshire firefighter and member of the
Duffield Premier Squash League team, has teamed up with seven-times
National Racketball Champion, Laura Hill to take-up the Squash-a-Mile
challenge. The pair have already exceeded their target by raising
£242 for Sport Relief ahead of their tilt at the title later this week.
The four competitors selected to take part in the Canary Wharf Classic run-off will be announced on Monday, 19 March.
