March 21, 2014 -
Avid Squash fans Bob Hanscom and Arthur Curran have corresponded with
each other across the world on the internet for several years, but this
week they eventually got to meet in person.
Bob (78) from Los
Angeles, California, USA flew westwards and Arthur (68) flew eastwards
across the world and met in the Malaysian State of Penang to watch the
Penang – CIMB 29th Women’s World Squash Championships and meet many of
their squash idols and fellow supporters.
Bob has been involved
in squash virtually all his life, including playing, coaching,
refereeing and tournament organising, whereas Arthur has only recently
(11 years ago) introduced himself to the game but is already heavily
involved in travelling worldwide to watch tournaments and occasionally
report on them for Squashsite, and it did not take long to involve
themselves in long discussions about all aspects of squash and the
people involved, and I am sure that will continue for the rest of the
week.
“After my 27 hours
door to door flight from L.A. to Penang, I am already finding the trip
to be extremely worthwhile. The organization of the event is proving to
be absolutely wonderful…and I’m am sure it will continue to be so all
week.”
“A long flight to get
here but that proved very worthwhile when on the first morning I met
Bob, with whom I had been corresponding for several years, and to be
able to sit and chat with him about the sport has been tremendous. The
event itself has obviously been so well organised and everybody we meet
is so so friendly, we have already been given VIP Invitations for the
Arena.
“I am sure that the
event will continue to amaze me, and I hope that the message of what a
great sport squash is will be sent around the world.”
