Chris Fernandez Makes College Squash History from CitySquash Media
March 24, 2015
-CitySquash was well represented at this year's College Squash
Association National Team Championships. Leading the pack on the men's
side was senior Chris Fernandez, who captained his St. Lawrence
University Saints to a second place finish nationally--their best-ever
result. Chris, who had never touched a squash racquet until trying out
for CitySquash when he was in the 6th grade, opened his CSA tournament
run by defeating his F&M opponent in four games. On Saturday, he
notched a critical four-game win that allowed St. Lawrence to edge past
Harvard 5-4. Although the Saints fell to national champions Trinity
College in the final, Chris made history by becoming the first urban
squash player to ever play in the national championship match.
Elsewhere in the CSA Men's
tournament, Darrius Campbell represented Bates who finished 13th, and
Santiago Moran helped Connecticut College finish 26th in the nation.
Andrew Cadienhead earned his first All-NESCAC team selection and his
Middlebury squad won the Summers Cup, giving them a season-ending
ranking of #17.
On the women's side, Myriam
Kelly made CitySquash proud after being named to her fourth consecutive
All-NESCAC team. Myriam was named Second Team All-NESCAC her freshman
and sophomore years before earning First Team honors as a junior and
senior. She captained Bates to an impressive national ranking of #16
this year. Other CitySquashers competing on the women's side included
Cris Margaret Frias and Andreina Benedith, who helped their Franklin
& Marshall team finish 17th in the country, and Nina Kelly who led
Bucknell to a 40th place finish.
