- Something very interesting was told to us by a junior squash-player
the other day while completing an hour-and-a-half squash-session! She
said: "When I play squash in the morning, I'm happy...for the rest of
the day!" "Out of the mouths of babes!" Why might this be so!
Well...it's the stimulation of endorphins brought-on by exercise!
Here's what science says: "Antibody production is connected to both
exercise and happiness. So too is endorphin production. Endorphins are
chemicals that are able to cross through the gaps between neurons in
order to pass-along a message from one to the next. There are many
different kinds...and much remains to be learned about their different
purposes and functions. One thing is known for certain about
endorphins: their ability to make you feel...oh-so-good!" And so...how
might warming up (before training and/or competing) produce the
same result!? Again...science says: "Research has suggested that fairly
lukewarm warm-ups may have a positive impact on performance. In one
investigation, a 15-minute warm-up at a paltry (medium) intensity of
just 60% VO2 maximum enhanced endurance performance by about 6% and
sprint-type effort by around 7%...compared with no warm-up at all."
So...if you want your junior squash-player to have a..."happy and feel
oh-so-good" experience during their squash training and/or
competition...don't forget to have them...warm-up!
