- Although Nicol David was not successful in winning her eighth world
squash championship title in Penang last weekend, she was the recipient
of two other prestigious awards.
On Thursday March 20th
in Penang, the Women's Squash Association (WSA) Platinum Service Award
was presented to Nicol. "I am truly honored to be recognized with the
2013 WSA Platinum Service Award by the panel," said the illustrious
Malaysian, who has topped the women's world squash rankings unopposed
since August of 2006. "Thank you for giving me the opportunity to give
back to women's squash. I hope to do more in the future to represent
our women's tour."
On Tuesday, March 25th
in Kuala Lumpur, Nicol was named as a Laureus Academy Ambassador, which
will definitely help squash gain global recognition. The world's #1
women's squash-player and seven-time world champion is only one of two
squash-players named by Laureus as their global sport Ambassadors, the
other being Nick Matthew of England, current PSA men's world #1
squash-player.
Nicol believes that
being part of the Laureus Academy means squash is slowly but surely
gaining more attention on the world stage. “When I first heard the
news, I was really surprised! It is quite a dream come true to be
recognized by Laureus and be associated with them,” said Nicol. “They
have prestige - and what they represent is truly global in terms of
sport. It is an honor that Laureus recognizes that I and SQUASH have
something to offer the Ambassador program." Left to right: Nicol's manager Rob Sutton, Nicol, her mother Ann and dad Desmond
It has been
acknowledged that Laureus needs to be much more than a spectacular red
carpet event. It is a year-round charity dedicated to effecting social
change through sport. The Laureus World Sports Academy is a world-wide
dedicated team of 46 legendary sportsmen and sportswomen who have all
volunteered their services to this cause, acting as global Ambassadors
and visiting various projects to encourage young people to participate
in sport.
On Monday, in
preparation for the upcoming $100,000 British Open scheduled for the
week of May 13-18, Nicol will be resuming her training in Amsterdam
with her coach Liz Irving. Stay tuned!
