PST Providence Open Underway

- The opening round of the 2012 Providence Open began saw Brady Thompson (USA) and Eric Lamsa (Canada) advance to Saturday's main draw.

The night began with the Mike Semprucci / Bradbury Thompson match. Sempucci is a Boston based pro, who plays many of the PST regional events. Thompson was the captain of this past year's Brown University squash team.

The match started awkwardly as Semprucci clipped Thompson on his backhand in the opening rally. Thompson required an injury timeout to stop bleeding from his nose. After the brief timeout the match resumed with both players moving around one another comfortably.

Both players are grinders who put the ball deep and wait for errors. Neither made many errors tonight. So, the rallies were often long. The four game match was 57 minutes long.

The first three games were close and hard fought. To be fair, either player could have won any of them. The scores were 12-10, 10-12, and 11-9. Games one and three were tied at 9 all, and game two was tied at 10 all.

Game four was all Thompson, however. He raced to a 7-0 lead and cruised to the finish. "I just hit a wall," said Semprucci in his post game remarks.

"I needed to be very patient tonight," said Thompson. "I'm glad to get the win."

Thompson will face Wael El Hindi in the quarter finals on Saturday.

Eric Lamsa advanced when his opponent withdrew due to injury. Lamsa will face Mohamed El Sherbini in the quarter finals.

Quarter finals begin Saturday @ 11:00 a.m.

11:00 a.m.: Mohamed El Sherbini v. Eric Lamsa
