Versatile 2024 World Open Champ Diego Elias Wins 2025 Canadian National Doubles With Robin Clarke By Rob Dinerman
Dateline March 30, 2025 ---
In an unprecedented demonstration of squash versatility, the reigning
World Open singles champion Diego Elias teamed up with Robin Clarke to
capture the 2025 Canadian National Doubles crown this afternoon at the
Granite Club in Toronto. The first-time pairing rallied from a two
games to one deficit in the semis to overtake former SDA superstar Gary
Waite and Peter Reiko by decisively winning the final two games 15-9,
15-4 and carried that momentum to a 15-10, 11 and 9 final-round victory
over No. 1 seeds Matthew Henderson and Jackson Kay, four-game semis
winners over Cole Osborne and Michael Woods.
Their victory represented the seventh Canadian National Doubles title
for Clarke ---- preceded by his wins from 2014-17 and in 2019 with
Scott Arnold and in 2023 with Robert Nigro --- while Elias, who was
making his competitive debut in hardball doubles, became the first
squash player ever to win both a World Open and a national doubles
championship (let alone to hold both distinctions at once). Top seeds
Nikki Todd and Jackie Moss swept to victory in the women’s draw without
dropping a game, culminating their triumphant three-match path with a
15-11, 8 and 13 final-round victory over 2015 and 2023 champs Steph
Hewitt and Seanna Keating, both of whom are also past champions
multiple times in this event with other partners as well.
