The Bluenose Squash Classic Voyage Continues by Jon Boody
March 2, 2013 -Halifax, Nova Scotia,
Even the Bluenose Squash Classic could not escape the far reaching
effects of the current global economic environment and has been
struggling to maintain the momentum of the past 7 years.
Fortunately, due to the generous support of our core sponsorship group,
and in particular, our new title sponsor, Fiera Properties Limited,
there will be an 8th annual Bluenose Squash Classic.
The 2013 Bluenose Squash Classic – Presented by Fiera Properties
Limited will be hosted in partnership with the Homburg Centre for
Health & Wellness at Saint Mary’s University October 2013 and will
offer up a prize purse of $35,000US.
While it is somewhat disappointing that the tournament will not see its
eighth successive year of growth, the two year financial commitment
received from Fiera Properties Limited is definitely a victory for the
local squash community. This two year financial commitment will
allow The Bluenose Squash Classic to weather the current period
economic uncertainty, and hopefully in time, attract sufficient
sponsorship revenue to once again bring the glass court back to Halifax.
The 2013 Bluenose Squash Classic – Presented by Fiera Properties
Limited will run October 15th through the 20th and overlap with the
$150,000 U.S. Open Squash Championships in Philadelphia which runs from
October 11th – 18th. The organizing committee believes that by
overlapping with the U.S. Open, and finishing five days before the
start of the $325,000 PSA World Championship in Manchester, England,
the Bluenose is positioned well to attract a relatively strong field
for a PSA International 35 event.
A new twist for the 2013 Bluenose Squash Classic – Presented by Fiera
Properties, is a guaranteed entry into the qualification draw for both
the Nova Scotia Open champion and the Atlantic Open champion.
The organizing committee would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers,
and local squash community at large for their continued support.
The committee is both focused and excited for October when we can once
again showcase this action packed sport and the athletes that play it
to our community.
