SDA Baltimore Cup Update: Mudge/Gould To Play Smith/Park In Final by Rob Dinerman Dateline March 2nd
--- Not content with their giant-killing exploits in their
opening-round stunning five-game Friday-afternoon win over the heavily
favored second seeds Paul Price and Clive Leach, Dan Roberts and his
first-time partner Fred Reid Jr. gave Jonny Smith and Greg Park all
they could handle this afternoon in the semifinal round of the $20,000
Baltimore Cup before the latter tandem finally pulled away in the
closing stretch of the fourth game to punch their hard-earned 15-13
15-14 13-15 15-9 ticket to Sunday's final. There they will meet Damien
Mudge and Ben Gould, who asserted themselves over Preston Quick and
Matt Jenson in the balancing semi by a 15-11, 9 and 12 tally. Reid and
Roberts had a double-game-ball opportunity in the second game but were
thwarted when Park nailed a clean forehand cross-court winner past Reid
at 14-all. The eventual finalists then let a 9-4 third-game advantage
slip away but regained control late in the fourth to qualify for their
second final as a team, the first having occurred last season in
Cleveland, where they won a thrilling five-game semi over Leach
and Manek Mathur before losing to Mudge and Gould.
