Damien Mudge and Ben
Gould were crowned the 2014 Baltimore Cup champions defending their
title in grand fashion. Paul Price and Clive Leach came out strong and
took an 11-7 lead and then 12-9, but Mudge/Gould drew level at 12-12
and it was point for point until 14-14 all, after a few let calls and
some long rallies the top seeds closed it out. Game one to Mudge/Gould
15-14.
Price/Leach again
stayed ahead in game two reaching 12-9, but once again Mudge/Gould drew
level to 14-14 all. This time it was Paul Price with a fantastic down
the middle winner to win 15-14 and even the match at 1-1.
It was neck and neck
through the 3rd but a few errors from Price allowed Mudge and Gould to
take the lead at 13-9. Leach and Price slowed things down and won the
next 3 points to make it 12-13. The crowd now at full capacity was on
the edge of their seats but Mudge/Gould stayed focused and took the
next two points. 15-12 to the world #1’s and 2-1 games lead.
The beginning of the
4th game was fast and furious with only a few points separating the two
teams, the score reached 11-11 all and the crowd now wanting to see a
5th game started to get behind the Price/Leach team. But that vocal
support seemed to spur on both Mudge and Gould who upped the pace and
intensity and hit some fantastic winners reaching match ball at 14-11,
Price saved the first match ball with a cross-court nick winner
but a well-timed down the middle from Mudge at 14-12 sealed the deal.
Game to Mudge/Gould 15-12 and match 3-1.
Damien Mudge and Ben
Gould, who had just been on the court competing against each other in
the pro/am final (Gould and his partner Jim Meek won that match 3-2
against Mudge and Robb Merritt), were now crowned the 2014 Baltimore
Cup Champions. Mudge/Gould defended their title wonderfully here at the
Baltimore Country Club and will look to be back in 2015 to make it
three in a row.
The Baltimore Country
club would like to thank all of the sponsors and supporters of this
year’s event. A capacity crowd of over a hundred came out to watch
today’s final and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
We would like to thank
tournament chair Dennis Graul for the tremendous amount of fundraising
and hard work he put in to make this event happen. We truly could not
have made this happen without him. And a big thank you to our squash
committee and squash chairman Ed Joffe for supporting this event on all
levels. And to the board members of the Baltimore Country Club who have
supported this event since its inception we thank you.
Lastly, thank you to
the SDA tour and all the players that came to Baltimore this weekend
and displayed incredible sportsmanship and played amazing world
class squash.
