Coach Across America Position with Racquet Up Detroit
Racquet Up Detroit is an after-school youth development program which
uses the sport of squash, in combination with academic tutoring,
literacy development, fitness education, community service, and
mentoring to make a lasting positive impact on the lives of urban
public school students. Founded in 2010 through a collaboration with
the National Urban Squash and Education Association (NUSEA), Racquet Up
works with forty 6th and 7th grade students from Detroit Public Schools.
Please note: squash playing and coaching experience is a requirement of
this position. In addition, this is a full-time Americorps position
which offers a living stipend, benefits, and an educational financial
award at completion.
Through the Coach Across America program, the Squash Program
Coordinator will serve as a coach, mentor, and program administrator,
while also assisting in other capacities to promote the organization's
goals. Responsibilities will include:
Plan and implement student recruitment process for new team of 40 fifth
grade students culminating in new program launch in January 2014
Assist with operations of 4 daily squash/fitness sessions, Monday
through Thursday, during after-school hours (approximately 4:00pm –
7:00pm), as well as a Saturday squash and fitness sessions
(approximately 8:30am-11:30pm)
Participate in occasional Friday and Saturday afternoon activities
Prepare materials and plans for after-school program sessions
Assist with management and implementation of fitness program for 40 students
Track student attendance, timeliness, and preparation on a daily basis
Manage pre- and post-program logistics, including walking students from
school to the program facility, and ensuring a safe and orderly
dismissal process
Participate in weekend activities including community service projects,
squash matches, cultural outings, and other field trips as needed
Build caring, supportive, meaningful relationships with students
Additional responsibilities as needed
In addition, a CAA coach at Racquet Up would be responsible for
building partnerships within the squash community to help recruit
volunteers, organize squash competitions, and deepen the organization's
ties to the squash enthusiasts in the area.
The ideal candidate will be a high-energy, creative, hard-working,
self-starter with strong communication, organizational, and
interpersonal skills. Most importantly, candidates must have a passion
for working with youth in the city, and a belief that all children can
learn and grow if given the proper guidance and support. Squash
experience is required. Applicant must hold a current driver's license
in good standing.
