In an early Sunday Morning at New York’s Princeton Club, a team of
Bronx players including 8 from CitySquash defeated a Manhattan team of
adults which included several members of the Board of Directors of New
York Squash. Bryan Patterson, affectionally known as “BP” and the
Captain of the Bronx Team emphasized that his team had twice as many
players as there are squash courts in the Bronx.
The match came down to the final minutes with Bronx leading 6-5, but
Manhattan was holding an edge in games won so that a victory in the
last game played would have given victory to the Manhattan team.
An extra effort by Cory Litman, CitySquash’s Assistant Director
of Squash, clinched the 7-5 win.
During the match there was a buzz floating through the courts. The
rumor was that BP, a beloved squash figure in both the US and the UK
was being considered for a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth. The storyline
was that the Royal Family, beset by recent controversy, wanted to focus
attention on the renowned Patterson. The players from CitySquash
asked Patterson to autograph their scoresheets figuring that if
Patterson was knighted, the value would soar.
BP was pleased by the “popup event” and promised more in the future. He
emphasized that Bronx squash would someday become the sport’s epicenter
and even exceed pizza in the number of news references.
