April 10, 2012-
Three years ago, Samantha Teran wrote, "In the future, I would like to
own a squash club. I would love to set up a good club, using the
experience I've gathered playing around the world." On Saturday, May 5th, (one day before her
31st birthday) Samatha's long-time "dream" will come true, as she, her
dad Javier and mother Sandra will celebrate the opening of their own
squash club located next door to their family restaurant in Mexico. Samantha was a girl who grew up in Mexico
City, basically doing what all children do, going to school, being a
bit of a prankster, playing a lot, riding her bicycle and loving
horses...basically enjoying a variety of sports.
It wasn't until she was 14 did Samantha
begin to play squash. Her dad was playing tournaments as a member
of the Mexican National Team - and began to teach her the game, which
by the way was on American sized cement courts. She usually went to
play at 10 p.m. because it wasn't until that hour that the courts
became available. The owner of the club used to leave the key for
Samantha and her dad to close up! How time flies! What wonderful achievments
this self-described (in three words) as "passionate, persevering and
friendly" lovely young woman accomplished in 17 years. What more could one want, being the #1
player in her country for 12 years, being the #1 female squash player
on the entire North American continent, the #11 ranked female
squash-player in the world, winning 12 WISPA/WSA Tour titles, the only
squash-player from her country to ever reach the semi-finals of a World
Open, (2011) - and winning a multitude of Medals over the years at the
Pan American and Federation Game Championships! Oh yes...Samantha's "dream" is coming true,
but she's not done! The day following the opening of her squash club,
(her 31st birthday), she'll board a flight to the UK where she'll
automatically be in the main draw of the $95,000 British Open. Who
knows what further dreams may come true for Samantha! Stay tuned!
