Top Two Seeds Toppled In Canadian National Doubles Semis by Rob Dinerman
Dateline April 14th, 2012---
Defending champions and top seeds Michael Pirnak and Willie Hosey were
defeated this afternoon by Will Mariani and Ian Power in the semifinals
of the Canadian National Doubles Championships in downtown Toronto.
Mariani and Power, doubles partners on the ISDA pro circuit (on which
Pirnak and Hosey were the No. 2 ranked team in the early-2000's), will
face Scott Stoneburgh and Chris Deratnay, semis winners over second
seeds James Hewitt and Martin Heath, Sunday afternoon in the final.
The women's Open final will feature
reigning World Doubles champs Steph Hewitt and Seanna Keating going up
against Jessica DiMauro and Dana Betts. There are a number of
intriguing age-group finals set as well, including the 65's final
between Tom Poor and Len Bernheimer of Boston and the Toronto team of
Tony Swift and Molson Robertson, a 2011-12 rubber match between these
two longtime rival pairings, with Poor and Bernheimer's five-game
early-season win in the Smith Chapman in Montreal being balanced in Rye
at the U. S. National Doubles earlier this month, where Swift and
Molson prevailed, also by a 3-2 margin.
