In Stunning Development, LA ‘28 Olympic Squash to Reportedly Be Contested on Different-Sized Court
by Ted Gross April 1, 2025- In an incredible twist--even by squash standards--the squash
portion of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games will reportedly be played
on a different-sized court.
The Olympic court dimensions will apparently be 23 feet wide by 30.5 feet deep.
The announcement was made yesterday by the LA ‘28 Racquet Sports Field Committee.
“We are unfortunately restricted by the layout of the stage at our
theater venue,” said Committee Chair Roger Thrice, “so we had to shorten
it up just a bit.”
“To compensate,” he said, “we widened the playing area from the
standard 21 to 23 feet. So the square footage is roughly the equivalent
of a traditional squash court.”
Thrice said the matches will be held exclusively at the brand new Elsa
Malooney Theater in Irvine. Construction on the theater is expected to
break ground in June.
“Can you believe this bull s***?” said a world squash official,
speaking on condition of anonymity. “No one out there is going to show
up at the matches anyway--why on earth would they place us in such a
circumstance?”
Field Committee Co-Chair Alison Youngstune cited the difficulty of staging events that don’t have a permanent venue in place.
“There are endless tweaks in the Games,” she said, “and we are forced
to make some tough calls. Hopefully the squash crowd understands that.
The main thing, the players are coming, and we’re looking forward to
hosting them on a similar enough court to what they are used to."
