Michael Rothenberg Big Apple Open A Swiss Army Knife Event from NY Squash
April 20, 2012-
The Rothenberg tournament (Apr. 28-29) might be a first for NY Squash.
We've done big tournaments, small events, parties, pro matches &
round robins before; but this is the first time we've successfully
combined all into one event.
* Big: The tournament
has been around since the mid-90's, but it has grown each year since we
moved it back to Brooklyn Heights.
* Small: The Eastern
Athletic Club is an undiscovered gem. Four courts in a lounge area that
also includes a pool table, ping pong (or couches if you just need to
recover) make for a social and warm setting for a tournament. Also (and
you didn't hear it from me), court expansion rumors abound.
* Pros: Not just pro
exhibition matches, but bragging rights. The best of USA vs Canada,
with Julian Illingworth playing Shahier Razik, experience vs. youth
(veteran Latasha Khan vs newcomer Sabrina Sobhy) and old school vs new,
with former collegiate national champion Bernardo Samper vs current
campus superstar Ramit Tandon.
* Parties: Open bar, buffet dinner. Done.
* Round Robins : The EAC
is famous for its round robins, and we are opening the courts in the
evening to everyone for open play.
Tournament entrants get free access to the party and matches. Signup closes on Sunday.
A $30 guest fee gets drinks, dinner, pro matches and the round robin.
