Scottish number one Alan Clyne picked up the sixth PSA World Tour title
of his career when he upset top-seeded Australian Ryan Cuskelly in
today's final of the Garavan's Bar Paddy Whack West Of Ireland Open,
the PSA Challenger 10 squash event in its eighth successive year at
Galway Lawn Tennis Club in Galway, Ireland. World No.37 Clyne took
just 37 minutes to overcome Dutchman Sebastiaan Weenink, the No.7 seed
in the semi-finals to reach his 12th final. By contrast,
left-hander Cuskelly was stretched for 76 minutes before overcoming
Clyne's national team-mate Greg Lobban, the Scottish No.2, 12-10, 11-7,
8-11, 11-8 in the other semi in a win which set up the US-based
Aussie's 13th Tour final appearance. It was Clyne's first
visit to Galway since winning the title in 2010 – and the 27-year-old
from Edinburgh celebrated his return in fine style, recovering from a
game down to beat World No.36 Cuskelly 4-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4 in 77
minutes. "It feels great to win
in Galway again," said Clyne (pictured below, left, with
Cuskelly) later. "We've had a tough training block over the
last few weeks in Scotland and, when it pays off with good results,
it's a nice feeling. "I want to keep this
form going into the Irish Open next week and hopefully peak come the
Europeans in Riccione at the end of the month."
